The Daily Tee

The Threadless $40 T-Shirt

by Mike on April 7th, 2008

Wow, I never thought I’d see the day when Threadless would sell a tee for $40.

It is definitely the most interesting shirt I’ve seen from Threadless yet. Each tee is originally white, but is then hand dipped into red dye. Pretty cool process, but for $40 I’ll pass on this one.

9 opinions for The Threadless $40 T-Shirt

    The fact that it’s individually hand dyed makes it worth $40? I don’t think so… especially since the sizes are off–you don’t even know if its going to fit after a few washes.

    It’ll be interesting to see how this goes down in the community as I think it could alienate certain sections of it.

    Threadless is getting bigger and bigger. The facts that they sell $5 bucks sale tees, $10 Thriftee and this kind of more expensive (I would say, premium) tees — show that they’re trying hard to expand its market share and reach even more new shoppers.

    Threadless is no more a small, cute, an “indie” tee shirt company — being mainstream brand is the way to go

    The trouble with becoming mainstream is that it can trap a brand into being dependant thus restricting the company from being creative and taking risks as they have to meet certain sales targets. Of course, it’s possible to not have that happen but it’s very difficult.

    This limited edition shirt reminds me of back when I bought comics and some new title would come out with alternate covers so the collectors would have to buy 4 or 5 copies to get them all. At that point they weren’t selling the book by its contents they were selling the book based on its scarcity. This took advantage of their most loyal customers and that’s what Threadless is doing now.

    Expanding market share isn’t a crime, it isn’t immoral or unethical, but it sucks when it is done the way Threadless is doing it. Selling kid’s shirts? This is like the local bar you hang out in deciding to become an Applebee’s or Ruby Tuesday’s. It will make more money and it isn’t “wrong” but it still sucks if you went there for a certain atmosphere. I don’t want to hang out in family restaurants and I don’t want to wear the same shirts as a 4 year old. The old indie Threadless is dying away and that sucks, plain and simple. I don’t care if they are making more money. We don’t need Threadless to be another Target or Walmart selling cartoon penguins on t-shirts no matter how profitable it may be. DBH FTW!

    @Jake

    I imagine, the kids will have their share to vote for their $5. ah, not forget the grandpas and the grandmas. Next time you can go to family gathering all wearing Threadless tees. hey they can try dog shirt too.. LOL

    This must be why I’m buying from Threadless less and less. And buying from DBH more and more.
